The First Spouse Series is a 1/2 oz gold coin collection produced by the United States Mint to honor the First Ladies of the United States. First introduced in 2007, the series follows the order of presidential terms, concluding with Betty Ford. The final coin released was the 2020 Barbara Bush issue, with eligibility determined by the $1 Presidential Coin Series. Today, Provident Metals offers the 2013-W US Mint First Spouse Edith Wilson 1/2 oz Gold Coin for purchase online.
Highlights:
These 2013-W US Mint First Spouse Edith Wilson 1/2 oz Gold Coins are certified Mint State 70. This grade ensures the coin has no visible imperfections and retains its original mint luster. Additionally, each coin includes a hand-signed label featuring the signature of David Hall, co-founder of the Professional Coin Grading Service.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2013-W US Mint First Spouse Edith Wilson Gold Coin presents a detailed portrait of Edith Wilson. As a close advisor to her husband, President Woodrow Wilson, she played an active role in his administration and traveled with him on diplomatic missions during World War I. At home, she spearheaded conservation efforts by promoting rationing initiatives such as meatless Mondays and wheatless Wednesdays and helped maintain a flock of sheep on the White House lawn. The inscriptions include EDITH WILSON, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, 2013, 28TH, 1915-1921, and the W mint mark.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2013-W First Spouse Edith Wilson 1/2 oz Gold Coin, her hand is shown resting atop President Wilsons as he holds onto a cane. Following his debilitating stroke in 1919, she took on a central role in managing his responsibilities. Edith was instrumental in deciding which matters required direct presidential attention, leading some to refer to her as the “Secret President.” Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $10, 1/2 OZ., and .9999 FINE GOLD.
History
Edith Wilson and President Wilsons marriage received criticism in the press due to the brief time between the passing of his first wife and their wedding. Despite public scrutiny, she remained steadfast in her role and helped ensure stability within the White House. After her husbands presidency, she dedicated herself to preserving his legacy, defending his policies and her role in his administration until her passing in 1961. At that time, she held the distinction of being the longest-living First Lady.
