Obverse

The obverse of the 2013-W US Mint First Spouse Edith Wilson Gold Coin displays a bust of Edith Wilson. She was a trusted figure in her husbands administration and often traveled with him during World War I. As First Lady, she introduced resource-saving measures at the White House, including wheatless Wednesdays and meatless Mondays, while also keeping sheep on the White House lawn to support wartime conservation efforts. Inscriptions read EDITH WILSON, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, 2013, 28TH, 1915-1921, and the W mint mark.

Reverse

The reverse design of the 2013-W First Spouse Edith Wilson 1/2 oz Gold Coin highlights Edith Wilsons role as the primary caretaker for her husband after his stroke in 1919. The image shows her hand placed over President Wilsons hand as he grips a cane. With the Presidents health in decline, Edith took on a significant role in decision-making, determining which matters required his direct attention and which could be handled by others. This led to her being referred to as the Secret President. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $10, 1/2 OZ., and .9999 FINE GOLD.

History

Edith Wilson became the second wife of President Woodrow Wilson in 1915 after the passing of his first wife during his first term in office. Their marriage took place just a year later, and Edith went on to play a vital role in his presidency. Following President Wilsons health complications during his second term, she became one of the most influential First Ladies in history.
