The First Spouse Gold Coin series from the United States Mint celebrates the contributions of First Ladies throughout American history. Helen Taft, known for her strong political involvement, played a key role in shaping the expectations of the role. Her international experiences in the Philippines while her husband, William Taft, served as governor-general influenced her time as First Lady. Right now, 2013-W US Mint First Spouse Helen Taft 1/2 oz Gold Coins are available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 2013-W US Mint First Spouse Helen Taft 1/2 oz Gold Coin has been graded Mint State 70 by the Professional Coin Grading Service. This means it features full mint luster and lacks any visible imperfections. This particular issue was the first in the series to have a mintage of fewer than 2,000 coins. Additionally, these coins come with a label hand-signed by David Hall, the co-founder of PCGS.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2013-W US Mint First Spouse Helen Taft Gold Coin features a forward-facing portrait of Helen Taft. Known as “Nellie” to those close to her, she served as First Lady from 1909 to 1913 while William Howard Taft was president. Inscriptions here include HELEN TAFT, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, 2013, 27TH, 1909-1913, and the W mint mark.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2013-W First Spouse Helen Taft 1/2 oz Gold Coin, her influence is reflected in the design. Inspired by her time in Japan, she played a key role in the effort to plant Japanese cherry blossom trees along the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. Today, these trees remain one of the citys most famous attractions. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $10, 1/2 OZ., and .9999 FINE GOLD.
History
Helen Taft left a lasting impact on the role of First Lady. She was the first to ride in her husbands inaugural parade, setting a precedent for future First Ladies to take on a more public role during inaugural events.
