The United States Mints First Spouse Series celebrates the First Ladies who supported their husbands during their time in office. This collection follows the chronological order of American Presidents, beginning with Martha Washington and continuing through Barbara Bush. Each First Lady is featured after her husband has been included in the $1 Presidential Coin Series. Now available from Provident Metals, the 2013-W US Mint First Spouse Ida McKinley 1/2 oz Gold Coin is part of this historic series.
Highlights:
Each 2013-W US Mint First Spouse Ida McKinley 1/2 oz Gold Coin available here has been graded Mint State 70 by the Professional Coin Grading Service, ensuring a flawless specimen with full mint luster. The label included in the slab has been hand-signed by David Hall, co-founder of PCGS.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2013-W US Mint First Spouse Ida McKinley Gold Coin displays a left-profile portrait of the First Lady. President McKinleys devotion to his wife was well-known, and he often made adjustments to presidential traditions, such as seating her next to him at formal dinners, so he could assist her if necessary. Inscriptions include IDA MCKINLEY, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, 2013, 25, 1897-1901, and the W mint mark.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2013-W First Spouse Ida McKinley 1/2 oz Gold Coin, her hands are depicted crocheting. Despite her health struggles, she created thousands of slippers that were sold to support childrens charities and other philanthropic causes. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $10, 1/2 OZ., and .9999 FINE GOLD.
History
Born in 1847, Ida Saxton married William McKinley in 1871. Her health declined significantly following their marriage, and she faced lifelong struggles with epilepsy and other medical conditions. These challenges affected her ability to perform many traditional duties as First Lady, but President McKinley remained dedicated to her care and well-being throughout their time in the White House.
