Obverse

The obverse of the 2013-W US Mint First Spouse Ida McKinley Gold Coin features a left-profile portrait of the First Lady. President McKinley often made accommodations to support his wife, even breaking long-standing White House traditions by ensuring she was seated beside him at formal state dinners. The inscriptions read IDA MCKINLEY, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, 2013, 25TH, 1897-1901, and the W mint mark.

Reverse

On the reverse of 2013-W First Spouse Ida McKinley 1/2 oz Gold Coins, her hands are depicted as she crochets. Despite her health struggles, Mrs. McKinley devoted herself to crocheting slippers, which she donated to charity. The proceeds from these donations were directed to childrens causes, making her efforts a meaningful contribution to those in need. Inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $10, 1/2 OZ., and .9999 FINE GOLD.

History

Ida McKinley, born in 1847 as Ida Saxton, was a progressive woman for her time. She took an active role in her fathers bank, a job that was uncommon for women of her social standing. She married William McKinley in 1871, but long before she entered the White House as First Lady, her health had started to decline. Throughout her tenure in the White House, her condition remained fragile, and her husband was known for his unwavering care and support.
