Though “caribou” is the name for reindeer in North America, there is nothing tiny about these herd animals best known for guiding Santa on Christmas Eve (though they do pull sleighs in Sweden and Finland).
Caribou are both wild and somewhat domesticated, valued for their meat, hide, antlers and even milk. They weigh up to 400 lbs. and stand about 5 feet tall at the shoulder. Both sexes grow antlers, the only species of deer in which this happens. Additionally, they have the largest antlers relative to their body size among deer species.
Thanks to the detailed color on this coin, you can see the power of this caribou’s antlers. The animal is painted in a realistic brown and white, its antlers reaching up into the rim.
