This PF70 coin from the Perth Mint has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, meaning it's in flawless condition. Each coin in the Megafauna series contains .999 fine silver and depicts terrifying lizards with sharp teeth and terrible claws, with vivid color and incredible detail.
The obverse shows the megalania, a giant monitor lizard creature that lived in Australia during the Pleistocene period, 30,000 years ago. Its tongue slithers out of its sharp-toothed maw, and one clawed hand reaches up to slash the viewer. The whip-like tail disappears into the horizon. The background shows the stark red of the Australian Outback. The outer rim reads MEGALANIA and 1oz 999 SILVER.
This monster was the largest terrestrial lizard known to have existed--and we can be grateful it is extinct. While modern monitor lizards rise to the height of a human calf, the megalania was at least 23 feet long and weighed up to 1,370 pounds. It had a mouth full of serrated, blade-like teeth--and may have been venomous, like the modern Komodo dragon. The megalania was truly a fearsome lizard.
The reverse of this sovereign coin shows Queen Elizabeth in profile, with the words ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA 2014, and 1 DOLLAR. The Megalania coin is the sixth coin in the Megafauna series.
Only 6,500 of these amazing coins will be minted, so add the 2014 Australian Megalania 1 oz Silver Proof coin to your collection today--before they are extinct again.
