Obverse
Walking Liberty graces the obverse of 2014 American Eagle Silver Coins. One of the most recognizable coin designs of all time, this iconic image was originally created by Adolph Weinman in 1916 for the U.S. Half Dollar. In it, Lady Liberty walks with an outstretched hand towards a rising sun and a brighter future for all. Obverse inscriptions read LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, 2014.
Reverse
A heraldic eagle motif is shown on the reverse of these American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins. If you look closely, you will see arrows and an olive branch in the birds talons. Historically, this imagery has represented Americas wars and the peace she aims to achieve. Inscriptions are also featured that read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1 OZ FINE SILVER, ONE DOLLAR.
History
In 1985, the authorizing legislation for the Silver Eagle coin program was signed into law by President Reagan. The following year, the first Silver Eagles were minted with designs from Adolph Weinman and John Mercanti. Weinmans iconic Walking Liberty portrait remains in use to this day. Meanwhile, Mercantis heraldic eagle motif was replaced in 2021 with a new flying eagle design from Emily Damstra.
