The 2014 1/2 oz Silver Battle of the Coral Sea is an ideal silver bullion coin for history buffs or members of the military. Made by the Perth Mint in Australia, the coin is made of 1/2 troy ounce of .999 fine silver.
The Battle of the Coral Sea, which this coin commemorates, was the first air-sea battle in the Pacific during World War II, just off the north-east coast of Australia. It occurred in May of 1942 between the Imperial Japanese Navy and the allied US and Australian Navy and Air Force. This event stopped the Japanese from advancing to the south. It is referred to as the “battle that saved Australia.”
The obverse of the Battle of the Coral Sea coin features Ian Rank-Broadley’s design of Queen Elizabeth II. It includes inscriptions of “ELIZABETH II,” “AUSTRALIA,” “1/2 OZ 999 SILVER,” “2014,” and “50 CENTS.”
The coin’s reverse features a WWII battleship with raised guns. It sails before the Stars and Stripes and the Southern Cross constellation. Inscriptions read “BATTLE OF THE CORAL SEA” and “WAR IN THE PACIFIC 1941 - 1945.”
Founded in 1899, the Perth Mint creates circulation coins and bullion products for Australia. It was established after gold was discovered in local deposits. In 1957, the mint produced the “purest of all gold” made of almost .999999 fine gold, causing the British Royal Mint to use the Perth Mint’s standards as its own benchmark for production quality. Now the Perth Mint is known for themed coins that feature animals indigenous to Australia.
Each Battle of the Coral Sea coin is shipped in brilliant uncirculated condition as it is received from the Mint. Quantities of 25 will ship in a mint-issued tube.
