The Gold Libertad was first introduced by the Mexican Mint in 1981, bringing back a design that had originally appeared on the 1921 Gold Centenario. The Gold Libertad followed in the footsteps of that earlier coin by reflecting national pride and artistic heritage. Since its introduction, the Gold Libertad has been issued each year in limited quantities. Right now, Provident Metals has the 2014 Mexican Libertad 1 oz Gold Coin available for purchase.

Highlights:

  • Comes with a protective plastic flip!
  • 18th date in the 1 oz Gold Libertad Series!
  • Final mintage of just 4,050 coins!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • Obverse showcases the Mexican coat of arms.
  • Reverse features the image of Winged Victory.

All 2014 Mexican Libertad 1 oz Gold Coins come in protective plastic flips. The series has a reputation for low mintages, and the 2014 coin is no exception with just 4,050 struck. After debuting in 1981, the 1 oz coin returned from 19911994 before resuming consistent annual production in 2000. The largest mintage still belongs to the original 1981 release, with 596,000 coins produced.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 2014 Mexican Libertad Gold Coin, the Mexican national coat of arms appears prominently. It depicts a golden eagle wrestling with a snake from atop a prickly pear cactus, framed by oak and laurel leaves. Around the edge are ten smaller versions of the emblem, each reflecting earlier versions used throughout the countrys history. Inscriptions include ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.

Reverse

The reverse side of 2014 Libertad 1 oz Gold Coins features the Angel of Independence, or Winged Victory. This statue stands atop a tall column in Mexico City and was built for the 100th anniversary of Mexican independence. Behind her, the two snow-capped volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl create a scenic mountain backdrop. Inscriptions read 1 ONZA, ORO PURO, 2014 LEY .999, and the Mo mint mark.

History

The original Gold Centenario design made in 1921 featured strong national imagery. Its obverse displays Mexicos official coat of armsan eagle on a cactus grasping a snakesurrounded by the words Estados Unidos Mexicanos. On the reverse side is Winged Victory, a well-known statue in Mexico City honoring independence. Minted in .900 gold and weighing 41.67 grams, the Centenario was both a commemorative release and a practical gold investment.
