The 2014 1 oz Igloo is one hot investment. According to the Royal Canadian Mint, the first installment of the O Canada series has a limited mintage of only 8,500, so get it while you can!
O Canada celebrates Canadian icons. In this case, it honors the traditional Inuit structure known as the igloo.
The .999 pure silver coin showcases an image of an Inuit family constructing an igloo, while a sled dog primly observes outside. Designed by artist Yves Berube, the detailed image shows a man cutting out a small block to allow light in, creating an ice window.
To the left, a woman holding her baby in an amaut, a lined pouch designed to carry a child, shapes and finishes the exterior. The Husky stands before the entrance, where extra snow blocks wait. The rim reads CANADA and 25 DOLLARS. The year 2014 is to the right, with another distant igloo to the left.
The obverse pays homage to Canada’s ruler with a portrait of the Queen wearing pearls. The rim includes the words ELIZABETH II and DG REGINA.
The igloo deserves its place on this coin, as a structure unique to the frigid reaches of Canada. The largest type of igloo had up to five rooms, housing 20 people. The structure is made of individual blocks of snow, polished to fit perfectly together without additional internal support. The heat trapped inside would also slightly melt the interior, smoothing it out and creating an additional layer of ice that strengthened the igloo overall.
