History

Steamboat Willie was released in 1928 as the first animated cartoon with synchronized sound and a soundtrack produced entirely after the film itself was produced. The film was the major release debut of Mickey Mouse and his girlfriend Minnie Mouse, even though the two had previously featured in Plane Crazy in 1927. The previous film had only been seen by test audiences. The tune Mickey whistles along to in Steamboat Willie is known as Steamboat Bill and was popularized in minstrel tales in the 19^th century and by Arthur Collins in the 1910s.
