Nevertheless, she made an impression during that time thanks to her forceful personality, strong convictions and considerable political talents. She was the first of the First Ladies to be able to cast a vote for her husband thanks to the recent advent of women’s suffrage, and proved instrumental in bringing out women voters. Obverse

Florence Harding’s portrait appears on the coin’s obverse field, along with inscriptions of her name, the coin’s year of issue and number in the series, her years of service (1921 – 1923), and the messages “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “LIBERTY.”

Reverse

The reverse field features stylized symbols of Mrs. Harding’s signature endeavors: a ballot and ballot box, a camera along with a combined torch and fountain pen, and initials representing veterans. History

The First Spouse Gold Coin Program was authorized by an act of Congress in 2005, and first began striking coins in 2007. The aim was to issue pure gold coins celebrating each of the nation’s Presidential spouses in chronological order of their service. The series began with Martha Washington, and provided commemorations of each spouse that followed her up until Barbara Bush’s time in the White House in the early 1990s. The coin celebrating Florence Harding features the sculpting work of Joseph Menna, a noted medallic artist who today is the Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint.
