The US Mint introduced the First Spouse gold coin series in 2007 to recognize the significant contributions of Americas First Ladies. Each coin in the series features a First Lady in the order of her husband’s presidency, provided he has left office and appeared in the corresponding $1 Presidential Coin Series. Provident Metals now offers the 2014-W US Mint First Spouse Lou Hoover 1/2 oz Gold Coin.
Highlights:
Each 2014-W 1/2 oz US Mint First Spouse Lou Hoover Gold Coin is in pristine Mint State 70 condition, meaning it has no visible flaws and retains its full mint luster. Each coin is also accompanied by a label signed by David Hall, co-founder of the Professional Coin Grading Service.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2014-W US Mint First Spouse Lou Hoover Gold Coin displays a right-facing portrait of Lou Hoover. As First Lady, she was deeply committed to the Girl Scouts and took an active role in humanitarian efforts before, during, and after World War I. The inscriptions read LOU HOOVER, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, 2014, 31ST, 1929-1933, and the W mint mark.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2014-W First Spouse Lou Hoover 1/2 oz Gold Coin, a 1920s radio is depicted. This design highlights a major milestone in public communication, as Lou Hoover was the first First Lady to deliver a nationwide radio address, broadening the role of First Ladies in public discourse. Inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIRST PUBLIC RADIO ADDRESS, APRIL 19, 1929, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $10, 1/2 OZ., and .9999 FINE GOLD.
History
Lou Hoover was a strong advocate for advancing opportunities for women. She encouraged greater access to education and professional development, using her position to support progress in these areas. As a speaker and writer, she helped break barriers and provided an example of leadership for women in her time.
