Obverse

Saint-Gaudens design, initially featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933, is hailed as the pinnacle of American coinage design. Reverse

The reverse depicts a family of bald eagles, a creation of sculptor Miley Busiek in 1986. This image, unique to the American Gold Eagle, portrays a male eagle returning to the nest guarded by a female with hatchlings. It beautifully captures the essence of family and protection.

History

The design on the obverse, created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907, was chosen in 1986 to represent the nation on the American Gold Eagle coin. Saint-Gaudens, a distinguished artist and sculptor, was personally selected by President Theodore Roosevelt for the task of redesigning the nation’s gold and silver currency.
