Obverse

On the obverse side of the 2015 Antique Tuvalu Goddesses of Olympus Athena 2 oz Silver Coin is a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. This image is the popular fifth-generation Australian image of the Queen created originally in 1998 for the Royal Mint of England. The Queen is shown in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. Reverse

The reverse face of each 2015 Antique Tuvalu Goddesses of Olympus Athena 2 oz Silver Coins includes a design of the goddess. Athena cuts an imposing figure in this wearing a battle helmet and wielding a shield that has the head of Medusa emblazoned on it. As she winds back to unleash a spear at an enemy, an owl flies over her head. Although Athena is most-often remembered as the goddess of warfare, she is also the goddess of wisdom and the owl is an official symbol of her presence.

History

The Athena release in the three-coin Goddesses of Olympus Series is the second issue. It followed the debut issue of Hera in early 2015 and was itself followed later in the year by the image of Aphrodite in the final issue of the collection. Each coin in the series is a 2 oz rimless blank with an antique polish. Both facets of the design help create the appearance of ancient coinage. The high-relief strike delivers greater visual depth to the design elements.
