The Homestead Act of 1862 was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln. Designed to encourage the westward movement and settlement of Americans outside the Eastern Seaboard region of the original American colonies, the law promised up to 160 acres of land to those willing to put in the effort.

Obverse

On the obverse side of 2015 ATB Homestead 5 oz Silver Coins is a depiction of President George Washington. This left-profile bust of Washington was created in 1932 by John Flanagan for use on the US quarter. It has featured on the quarter since that time and is the static obverse design of all coins in the ATB Series.

Reverse

The reverse face of the 2015 ATB Homestead 5 oz Silver Coin features a humble log cabin in the center with a water well in front of it and two ears of corn flanking it. The design is meant to reflect all of the necessary requirements for life on the prairie: food, water, and shelter. The Homestead Act resulted in one of the largest transition of public land to private ownership in American history.

History

Roughly 270,000,000 acres of public land was eventually transferred to private ownership as a result of the Homestead Act of 1862. In order for Americans to successfully complete their land claim under the act, settlers needed to live on the land for five years and successfully cultivate and improve the land.

Ordering

These 2015 ATB Homestead 5 oz Silver Coins are available to purchase in Mint State 69 condition. Coins in MS69 condition have full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Those flaws are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines. Though these are bullion coins, the PCGS notes each one as a DMPL product, indicating aspects of a deeply-mirrored, proof-like finish.
