The kookaburra is a small bird species native to the Australian continent. Although unnoticed by most tourists, locals are familiar with the species for its distinctive call. A kookaburra call is said to sound eerily similar to that of a human laugh. It was the first native species to feature on a major bullion coin from the Perth Mint when it debuted in 1990, launching a craze that grew to include the Australian Koala and Australian Kangaroo bullion coins.
