Designed by Susanna Blunt in 2003, the obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Inscriptions include Her Majesty’s name, the coin’s denomination, and the year of issue.
The reverse, designed by Pierre Leduc, showcases a lone Grey Wolf howling in a Canadian forest. Characteristic of Canadian bullion coins, radial lines are present on both the obverse and reverse as a means of security.
The Grey Wolf has a history of being hunted throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. In fact, the species was hunted to near extinction, which led to the extirpation of the wolves from most of their original homelands. Today, the Grey Wolf has made an impressive comeback and approximately 30 percent of the world’s Grey Wolf population lives in Canada. This silver coin honors the Grey Wolf’s ties to Canadian forests.
