Born in August 2013, Bao Bao became a celebrated addition to the zoo. Her name, which means precious or treasure, was selected through a public vote during a naming ceremony hosted by the zoo. The inscriptions read GIANT PANDAS MEI XIANG AND BAO BAO AT NATIONAL ZOO and 5 OZ AU .999.

History

The medal’s featured panda is Mei Xiang, one of the most beloved residents of the Smithsonian National Zoo. Born in 1998, Mei Xiang arrived at the zoo in 2000 and quickly gained a loyal following for her gentle personality and success as a mother. She became known for her quiet habits and the way she cared for her cubs, charming many visitors over the years.
