The Perth Mint has decided to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek television series with a coin series for the nation of Tuvalu. Star Trek, created by Gene Roddenberry, has been made into four television series. The latest coin in the series was created to celebrate the crew, captain, and ship of Star Trek: Voyager. Right now, you can purchase the 2015 Proof Tuvalu Star Trek Captain Janeway 1 oz Silver Coin from Provident Metals.
The original Star Trek series began in 1966 on NBC and lasted for just three seasons in the United States. Eventually, Gene Roddenberry went on to create two spinoff series, an animated series, and numerous feature films.
Star Trek: Voyager didnt appear on television until 1995. It was the first series to air without any input from Roddenberry, as he had passed away several years before the series aired. This series showcased its first female commanding officer named Captain Kathryn Janeway, played by Kate Mulgrew.
Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the obverse of all of these coins. She is shown in right-profile relief as created by Ian Rank-Broadley. This image was created in 1988 and has been used on coinage for countless countries that used to be part of the British Empire.
On the reverse face of the coin, you will see the colorized image of Kate Mulgrew as Captain Janeway. In the background, you will notice an overhead shot of the USS Voyager, the ship Janeway was the captain of. Engravings on this side of the coin include Janeways name, as well as the coins weight, purity, and metal content. You will also see a P mint mark for the Perth Mint.
The Perth Mint was established in 1899 after gold deposits were found in nearby areas. It was the third branch of Britains Royal Mint in the country. However, the mint is no longer associated with Great Britain, and it was given to the Government of Western Australia in 1970.
