The Rwandan Wildlife Series started in 2008 with the gorilla design. The reverse design stays the same each year, and only part of the obverse design changes with each release.

Obverse

On the obverse face of each coin, you will see the image of a Cape Buffalo with its calf on the savannah. This side also features the topographical map of Africa, which can be found on all of the coins in this series. The new element to the design is always on the lower left side of the reverse face of the coin.

Reverse

The reverse side of each coin bears the image of the official Rwandan crest. Also on this side of the coin, you will see a variety of engravings in a local Rwandan tribal dialect. One of the engravings identifies the Central Bank of Rwanda as the issuing nation for these coins.

History

These coins are produced by BH Mayer Mint out of Germany. The Rwandan government approached the mint to produce these coins annually. Also known as Mayer Mint, this mint has been a family-owned and operated enterprise since its founding in 1871.
