Truman for just under three months when, in 1945, the magisterial Roosevelt Administration came to an end with the death of the great “FDR.” After the conclusion of the Second World War, Mrs. Truman reinstituted the customary social calendar associated with the White House — long suspended by conflict — and quickly made a name for herself as one of the hardest-working hostesses Washington had ever seen. She joined her husband on a whistle-stop tour in service of his reelection bid in 1948, a campaign that culminated in the unexpected defeat of heavily-favored Republican candidate Thomas Dewey. Reverse

The reverse field features a locomotive wheel on a train track, symbolic of the whistle-stop tour of 1948. Along with this is the lettering “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “$10,” and “1/2 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD.”

History

The First Spouse Gold Coin Program was created in response to an act of Congress in 2005 and was issued by the U.S. Mint from the years 2007 through 2016. It celebrated Presidential spouses in chronological order from the very first — Martha Washington — down to the forty-first (Barbara Bush in the early 1990s). The series’ tribute to Bess Truman, the 33rd First Lady in the sequence, features the sculpting talents of renowned medallic artist Phebe Hemphill and the design work of Joel Iskowitz.
