James Earle Frasers roots in Winona, Minnesota, and his upbringing in the heart of the American Midwest deeply influenced his artistic vision. This simple yet profound background inspired designs and sculptures that eventually became part of the American heritage, notably seen in the Buffalo Nickel.

Commissioned in 1913 to reimagine the American five-cent piece, Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel incorporated facial features from three notable Native American leaders and Black Diamond, a bison from the Central Park Zoo. The Buffalo, or Indian Head, Nickel circulated from 1913 to 1938.
