Like the American Silver Eagle and British Silver Britannias, Silver Libertads consist of one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, are legal tender, and are backed by a national government.
The National Mint of Mexico, or the Casa de Moneda de Mexico, was established in 1535 in Spain, making it the oldest mint in the Americas. Because the National Mint of Mexico is an ISO9001 approved mint, and produces Libertads with strict production quality and metal purity standards, Mexican Silver Libertads may be included in self directed Precious Metals IRAs.
1982 was the first year the Mexican Silver Libertads were issued. The initial design was inspired by the Centenario gold coin, which commemorated Mexico’s independence from Spain and was minted from 1921 through 1947. The original Libertad featured Winged Victoria (or Victory), the Mexican Angel of Independence, holding a wreath of laurel and a broken chain.
Like its predecessors, the reverse of the 2016 Silver Libertad features Winged Victory. The Victory Angel stands between two volcanoes named Popocatepeti and Iztaccihuati for two lovers from pre-Columbian lore. “1 ONZA,” “PLATA PURA,” “2016” and “LEY .999” are inscribed on the reverse.
The obverse of the Silver Libertad features Mexico’s national seal. The seal includes an eagle standing atop a cactus carrying a snake in its beak. Similar symbols surround the seal and represent Mexico’s 10 provinces. “ESTDOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS” is inscribed around the central image.

Since inception in 1982 the Mexican libertad had undergone few changes. Four in total. I have been wanting to start a collection other than eagles which are reasonable to obtain. I ordered several different years covering most of the four types available. Provident never disappoints. Their shipping was super fast and the coin quality never disappoints. Not just these coins but any coins I have received from Provident are always "BU" unless otherwise noted. Great bullion site."

I just received my first 2016 Libertad today, and just like previous years it looks wonderful. It’s the same design as last year, except for the different year of course, but the rest of it is the same excellent detail we’ve come to expect. I take a liking to the matte finish on both sides, and so far I haven’t experienced any milk spotting on any previous years so I hope this trend continues. It doesn’t mention it in the description, but this coin is 40mm in diameter, and fits really nicely in the 40.6mm Air-Tites. I definitely plan to add some more of these throughout the year ahead.
