This 2016 10 oz Silver Kookaburra is the latest release in the annual Silver Kookaburra Series from the Australian Perth Mint. Each highly anticipated coin is composed of 10 troy ounces of .999 fine silver, making it a valuable addition to any Silver Bullion collection or Precious Metals IRA.
The reverse of this 10 oz Silver Coin features a laughing kookaburra on a fence post in the outback. The complex design shows barbed wire wrapped around the pole and meticulous definition on the bird’s feathers. “AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA” and ” 2016 10oz 999 SILVER” are engraved around the edge of the image.
Kookaburras are the largest birds in the kingfisher family standing anywhere from 11 to 17 inches in length. They inhabit areas with running water and tall trees in Australia and New Guinea. Their diet consists of mice, snakes, small reptiles, fish, and even other smaller birds. Kookaburras have a very distinct call, which oftentimes sounds like a loud, echoing human laugh.
An effigy by Ian Rank-Broadley of Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse. Her Majesty’s name, “AUSTRALIA,” and the coin’s year of release and denomination are also inscribed. On Sept. 9, 2015, Queen Elizabeth II surpassed Queen Victoria, her great-great grandmother, as the longest reigning British Monarch.
