The National Mint of Mexico was established in 1535 in Spain, and is the oldest mint in North and South America. Mexican Silver Libertads were issued first in 1982. The initial design came from the Centenario gold coin, which commemorates Mexico’s independence from Spain and was produced from 1921 through 1947. The first Libertad featured Winged Victoria (or Victory), the Mexican Angel of Independence, holding a laurel wreath and a broken chain.

Like its predecessors, the reverse of the 2016 Silver Libertad features Winged Victory. The Victory Angel stands between two volcanoes, named Popocatepeti and Iztaccihuati for two lovers from pre-Columbian lore. “2 ONZA,” “PLATA PURA,” “2016” and “LEY .999” are inscribed around the rim of the reverse.

The obverse of the Silver Libertad features Mexico’s national seal. The seal includes an eagle standing atop a cactus carrying a snake in its beak. Ten designs representing Mexico’s 10 provinces surround the seal. “ESTDOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS” is inscribed around the central image.
