The United States Mint marked a 100th anniversary in 2016 that was incredibly special. In the early 20th century, the US Mint was overhauling the designs on American coinage to better reflect the growing international prominence of the nation. One of the final steps in this challenge came in 1916 when the Barber Coinage designs for the dime, quarter, and half dollar were replaced with beautiful new images of Liberty. Today, you have the chance to get 2016-W American Walking Liberty Half Dollar 1/2 oz Gold Coins online at Provident Metals in perfect condition.

  • Bears a W mint mark from the West Point Mint.
  • Please keep in mind these coins could have the same labels and grading houses when you buy several.

In 1916, the dime, quarter, and half dollar were among the last American denominations to receive design overhauls. President Theodore Roosevelt had started the initiative in 1905 when he approached Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign the Liberty images on the $10 Eagle Gold Coin and $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin. In 1907 and 1908, new images were introduced on all four Eagle Gold Denominations. The US penny was redesigned in 1909 and the nickel in 1913. The last coin to be redesigned was the silver dollar, which returned to production in 1921 with the Morgan Dollar design before launching the Peace Dollar in December 1921.

Obverse

On the obverse of 2016-W American Walking Liberty Gold Half Dollars is the image of Lady Liberty. This left-profile relief captures her draped in the American flag walking toward the sun on the horizon. The inscriptions read LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the W mint mark of the West Point Mint, and 2016.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2016 American Walking Liberty Half Dollar Gold Coin features an American bald eagle. In this design, the eagle is in left-profile relief on a rock ledge with its wings raised and its talons clutching a small sapling. The inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, HALF DOLLAR, AU 24 K 1/2 OZ., and the AW signature mark of Weinman.

History

The Walking Liberty Half Dollar would remain in circulation from 1916 to 1947, and was later revived in 1986 for the obverse of the new American Eagle Silver bullion coin.
