Kentucky’s Cumberland Gap is an iconic American landmark: gateway to the American West and a natural highway from the east coast through the Appalachian Mountains from prehistoric times. The U.S. Mint’s limited issue quarter celebrates this site, now protected as a national park, as part of both American and world history, and an entry in the U.S. Mint’s limited-edition America the Beautiful bullion series. Kentucky joined that legacy with the 2016 5 oz ATB Cumberland Gap National Historic Park Silver Coin.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with a PCGS protective plastic slab!
  • 2016’s 2nd issue in the U.S. Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters series!
  • Limited number of certified near-perfect silver coins!
  • Contains 5 troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • Face value of a quarter dollar (USD) backed by the United States government.
  • Graded Mint State 69 by the Professional Coin Grading Service.
  • DMPL designation.
  • The obverse side features a classic portrait of George Washington.
  • The reverse side portrays a portrait of an explorer surveying the Cumberland Gap.

Provident Metals provides this coin in near-perfect condition. Mint State 69 coins have full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor detractions. These detractions are limited in nature to minuscule contact marks or hairlines and must be located outside the primary focal points. DMPL stands for deeply-mirrored, proof-like, indicating these BU coins have some proof-like visual qualities.

History

The Cumberland Gap, a pass through the Cumberland Mountains, is famous in American history as a passageway for the explorers and settlers who would go on to create the American West. Herds of woodland buffalo pioneered it as a path that would later be trodden by Native Americans and afterward, by settlers and explorers. It’s one of a host of American sites that the U.S. Mint has showcased in its America the Beautiful bullion series.

Obverse

The obverse side features a familiar profile of the nation’s first President, seen for over eighty years on the most commonly-issued American quarter and derived from a 1932 John Flanagan design that in turn was based on a sculpture of George Washington made during his life. It bears the inscriptions “United States of America,” “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” and “Quarter Dollar.”

Reverse

The reverse side features a striking portrait of a pioneer gazing out over Cumberland Gap, created by the U.S. Mint’s Chief Engraver. The adjacent inscription is “First Doorway to the West.” Those around the rim read “Cumberland Gap,” “Kentucky,” “2016,” and “E Pluribus Unum.”
