Obverse

On the obverse of 2016 ATB 5 oz Silver Coins is a portrait of President George Washington. This visual shows Washington in left-profile relief and was created by John Flanagan in 1932. Flanagan used a 1786 sculpted bust of President Washington as inspiration for his coin design. This image debuted on the circulation quarter in 1932 and remains the face of that coin. The inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and QUARTER DOLLAR.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2016 ATB Fort Moultrie 5 oz Silver Coins comes with a depiction of William Jasper. A member of the South Carolina militia, Jasper was involved in the Battle of Sullivans Island that saw American militia hold back an assault on Charleston by the British Royal Army and Royal Navy. During the battle, the regimental colors of the militia were blown off the ramparts. Jasper, as shown here, ran into the thick of the battle to retrieve the colors and hoist them back up the ramparts to show the British that the Americans werent backing down. Inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, FORT MOULTRIE, SOUTH CAROLINA, and 2016.

History

Originally known as Fort Sullivan, Fort Moultrie was made from local palmetto logs to defend Charleston from the British. South Carolina militia regiments under the leadership of General William Moultrie defended the city from the British during the Battle of Sullivans Island. The American victory was due in large part to the palmetto logs. The flexible, but strong, wood repelled British cannonballs and allowed the Americans to withstand the assault.
