Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II is depicted on the obverse of 2016 Australian Wedge Tail Eagle 1/10 oz Gold Coins. This is the fifth-generation right-profile portrait of the Queen on Australian coinage and was created by Ian Rank-Broadley. This design was initially created for the Royal Mint of England and British currency in 1998 and featured on Australian coins from 1999 to 2018. It depicts the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara on her head.
Reverse
A wedge tail eagle is found on the reverse of 2016 Australian Wedge Tail Eagle 1/10 oz Gold coins. This design is the second in the series and the first to feature on gold coins in the collection. It depicts the large wedge-tail eagle resting on its perch on the broken limbs of a tree with its eyes scanning the surrounding area for threats or opportunities for prey.
History
The Perth Mint launched the Australian Wedge Tail Eagle coins in 2014 as 1 oz silver bullion coins. The designs in this series are the work of John Mercanti, the former Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Gold coins did not debut in the series until the release of these 1/10 oz gold coins in 2016. Mr. Mercantis designs are redone with some regularity. For example, the 2014 and 2015 silver coins shared a design, with 2016 introducing a second design for the third year of the series.
