Obverse

President George Washington is featured on the obverse field of the 2016 Colorized ATB Shawnee National Forest 5 oz Silver coin. This left-profile bust of the president was created in 1932 by John Flanagan. In the prior year, Congress had authorized Washingtons image for the quarter starting in 1932 in honor of the 200th anniversary of his birth. The bust of Washington replaced the Standing Liberty coin design and remains on the specimen to this day.

Reverse

One of the most prominent geographic features in Shawnee National Forest is depicted on the reverse of the 2016 Colorized ATB Shawnee National Forest 5 oz Silver Coin. The formation of rocks at Camel Rock is so-named because it resembles a camel lying down with its neck upright.

History

Shawnee National Forest was designated in 1939 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Though it was originally established to protect existing hardwood forests in the region, it was expanded in the 1930s and 1940s with the inclusion of exhausted farmlands that were replanted with firs and pines by the Civilian Conservation Corps to help prevent further soil erosion in the region.
