The 2016 Australian Colorized Lunar Monkey Gemstone Eye 1 Kilo Silver Coin features a fun colorized image that adds a hint of fun to the series. The coin is also unique amongst others in the series in that it features a gemstone on the eye of the adult monkey. The Lunar Series II coins were introduced in 2008, immediately following the successful conclusion of the popular Lunar Series I program issued by Perth Mint. Every year, the mint releases a fresh design that features the animal that appears appearing on the Chinese Lunar Calendar that year.
2016, the ninth year in the Zodiac cycle is celebrated as being the Year of the Monkey. The Perth Mint offers different designs for the silver and gold versions of the coin. In this special issue, gemstones have been added to the reverse design of the coin.
Obverse
The obverse design of the 2016 Australian Colorized Lunar Monkey Gemstone Eye 1 Kilo Silver Coin features the right-profile portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998. This is the fourth-generation image of Her Majesty to appear on commonwealth coins since she ascended to the throne in 1952.
Reverse
On the reverse design of the 2016 Australian Colorized Lunar Monkey Gemstone Eye 1 Kilo Silver Coin features the image of an adult and a younger monkey. The younger monkey is shown holding a peach in its hand, extending it out to the adult monkey.
The Perth Mint was founded in 1898 as a part of the British Royal Mint. Today, it is not at all affiliated with the federal governments Royal Australian Mint. The coins that it produces do enjoy legal tender status, however. The Perth Mint also produces coinage for other nations around the world.
