Like all coins produced by Great Britain in 2016, the obverse features an image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II wearing a jewel-studded crown. For centuries, all British coins have featured a likeness of the monarchy. The coin’s official face value of 25 pounds is also displayed on the obverse.
The reverse displays a rhesus monkey swinging through the trees. The inscription “YEAR OF THE MONKEY” appears on the left side, along with the coin’s weight and purity. This highly attractive motif is the work of British-Chinese artist Wuon-Gean Ho, who also designed the British Royal Mint’s 2014 Horse and 2015 Sheep lunar coins.
This is a 2016 Lunar Year of the Monkey 1/4 ounce gold coin struck by Great Britain’s Royal Mint. Much like the Perth Mint of Australia, the UK Royal Mint now issues a series of lunar-themed coins. This product line was first unveiled in 2014 and is distributed to collectors and investors throughout the world. This particular coin was released in 2016 to celebrate the zodiac Year of the Monkey.
