Harpers Ferry National Historical Park preserves the site of a former US Army supply depot and armory at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. History

John Brown was an abolitionist who lead a force of roughly 60 men to try and take arms and ammunition from Harpers Ferry. The group planned to provide those arms to slaves and former slaves to launch and insurrection and force the issue to end slavery in the US. Ironically, John Browns forces were confronted by a group of US Marines under the command of Lt. Colonel Robert E. Lee, the man who would eventually lead the entire Confederate Army.
