The design on the reverse face of the 2016 Harpers Ferry 5 oz Silver Coin recalls the building in which the embers of the abolitionist conflict broke out into the flames of war. John Browns Fort at the Harpers Ferry Armory is depicted on the reverse of the West Virginia coin in the America the Beautiful Series. Today, you have the chance to purchase the 2016-P Burnished ATB Harpers Ferry 5 oz Silver Coin online from Provident Metals.
Harpers Ferry National Historical Park preserves the site of a former US Army supply depot and armory at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. The site was selected early on by George Washington as a suitable arms depot for the fledgling United States Army. By the time of the Civil War, the site was an established US Army location and became the target of abolitionists seeking to arm former slaves and force the movement to end slavery forward.
On the obverse side of the 2016-P Burnished ATB Harpers Ferry 5 oz Silver Coin is a depiction of President George Washington. This left-profile portrait of Washington was created in 1932 by John Flanagan and placed on the US Quarter that year to honor the 200th anniversary of his birth.
The reverse of the 2016-P Burnished ATB Harpers Ferry 5 oz Silver Coin includes a vision of a building that has become known as John Browns Fort. The building is actually just a firehouse at the Harpers Ferry depot that was eventually occupied by abolitionists seeking to steal arms and ammunition from the depot.
John Brown was an abolitionist who lead a force of roughly 60 men to try and take arms and ammunition from Harpers Ferry. The group planned to provide those arms to slaves and former slaves to launch and insurrection and force the issue to end slavery in the US. Ironically, John Browns forces were confronted by a group of US Marines under the command of Lt. Colonel Robert E. Lee, the man who would eventually lead the entire Confederate Army.
2016-P Burnished ATB Harpers Ferry 5 oz Silver Coins are housed individually inside of protective display boxes and come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
