Obverse

The obverse side of 2016-P Burnished ATB Shawnee National Forest 5 oz Silver Coins bears the depiction of President George Washington. The nations first president, Washington is depicted here in left-profile relief. This design was created in 1932 by John Flanagan for the circulation quarter. It has been on that denomination since that time. The image was added to the quarter in that year to mark the 200th anniversary of Washingtons birth.

Reverse

It is easy to see how the Camel Rock formation got its name. The distinctive shape looks just like a camel lying down with one hump visible and its upright neck topped by its elongated head.

History

President Franklin D. Roosevelt designated the Shawnee National Forest as a federally protected site in 1939. It represents the largest publicly protected and owned land in the state of Illinois and covers 260,000 acres across nine different counties in the southern part of the state. These particular coins are the burnished version in the ATB release that boast a matte finish compared to the appearance of the bullion coins.
