The stock horse is a distinctive breed developed in Australian through the combined bloodline of various other breeds the British brought to the continent during the colonial era. Eventually, the Australian stock horse emerged as its own breed known for strength and stamina while working farms and ranches. The horse burst onto the international stage during World War I when ANZAC forces fighting for the Allied Powers used the stock horse in battle.

On the obverse, 2016 Proof Australian Stock Horse 5 oz Gold Coins feature the Ian Rank-Broadley design from 1998. It was originally designed for the Royal Mint of England and used on Australian coins beginning in 1999 as the fifth-generation effigy to appear on Australian currency. The right-profile portrait depicts the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara.

The Perth Mint issued silver and gold bullion coins in the Australian Stock Horse Series from 2013 to 2017. The series included gold coins in 1 oz bullion, 1 oz proof, and 5 oz proof options.
