Winged Victory was a powerful symbol of revolution and independence in Mexico in the 19^th century. Adapted from the goddess of victory, Nike, she holds the same wreath crown, but in this Mexican version of the female figure she holds a broken pair of chains in her left hand. This symbolizes Mexicos break from Spanish colonial control. The Winged Victory statue depicted here is the same as is found at the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column.
