Proof Mexican Libertad Silver Coins debuted in 1983 with just a 1 oz silver coin available, but were suspended after that year for the next two years. From 1986 onward, the 1 oz coin has been available each year. The 1992 production year saw the introduction of four fractional-ounce coins, while 1996 brought the introduction of these 2 oz silver coins and a 5 oz silver coin. These coins have been struck every year since, with the exception of 2012.

Obverse

The obverse field of the 2016 Proof Mexican Libertad 2 oz Silver Coin comes with the statue of Winged Victory from the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column. The column and statue were erected in Mexico City in 1921 to celebrate 100 years of freedom from Spanish colonial control. Other elements of the design include the volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl in the distant background field.
