The 2016 1 oz Mexican Silver Libertad is now available from the National Mint of Mexico through Provident Metals. Like the American Silver Eagle and British Silver Britannia, Silver Libertads are made of one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, are legal tender, and are backed by a national government.
The National Mint of Mexico, or the Casa de Moneda de Mexico, was established in 1535 in Spain, making it the oldest mint in the Americas. Because the National Mint of Mexico is an ISO9001 approved mint, and produces Libertads with strict production quality and metal purity standards, Mexican Silver Libertads may be included in self directed Precious Metals IRAs.
Mexican Silver Libertad coins were first issued in 1982. The original design came from the Centenario gold coin, which commemorates Mexico’s independence from Spain and was minted from 1921 through 1947. This coin featured the Mexican Angel of Independence, “Winged Victoria” (also referred to as “Winged Victory”) holding a wreath of laurel and broken chains.
Like the Centenario gold coin, the reverse of the 2016 Mexican Silver Libertad features the Angel of Victory. The Victory Angel stands between two volcanoes, named Popocatepeti and Iztaccihuati for two lovers from pre-Columbian lore. “1/4 ONZA,” “PLATA PURA,” “2016” and “LEY .999” are inscribed around the rim of the reverse.
Mexico’s national seal — an eagle standing atop cactus with a snake in its beak — is displayed at the center of the obverse. “ESTDOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS” is inscribed around the central image.
The 2016 line of Silver Mexican Libertads is a beautiful addition to Provident Metals’ Silver Bullion offerings. Like its United States and Canadian Counterparts, the Mexican Silver Libertads are offered in various weights. All Silver Libertads will ship in the condition that they are received from the mint. Individual coins will ship in plastic flips, and quantities of 25 ship in plastic tubes.
