The lunar-series from the Royal Australian Mint might be one of the newer series with lunar-themed designs, but it is one of the most distinctive on the market. The series will have a coin for each of the 12 animals on the Chinese Lunar Calendar. RAM offers the series in both silver and gold variations. Today, you can purchase the 2016 Royal Australian Mint Lunar Year of the Monkey 1 oz Gold Coin from Provident Metals.
Coin Highlights:
The Royal Australian Mints Lunar Series is one of the newest on the market, as many of the others started back in the 1990s. The series features both silver and gold options. The silver series features only 1 oz coins, while the gold series can come in a variety of sizes, including many fractional options. Each coin in this listing will ship to your door in protective plastic capsules.
Obverse
Each coin showcases Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse in right-profile relief. Around her effigy, you will find small icons showcasing each of the 12 animals from the lunar calendar, with the monkey at the top of the wheel. Engravings on this side of the coin include, Elizabeth II, Australia, and 100 Dollars.
Reverse
A smiling monkey is featured proudly on the reverse of each coin. The monkey is sitting among viny tree branches covered in blooming flowers. He is gripping a branch in each paw. The engravings on this side of the coin include the year of mint, coin weight, and purity of the gold, as well as the Chinese symbol for monkey.
History
As the first Australian mint to gain independence from the British Royal Mint, RAM can produce circulating coins for the nation. Each year, the mint produces several different types of bullion and commemorative coinage for the country of Australia. The Lunar series is like many other lunar collections available, like those from the Chinese Mint, the Royal Canadian Mint, and Perth Mint.
