Obverse

On the obverse side of 2016 Somalia Elephant 1 oz Gold Coins is a depiction of the Somali coat of arms. The seal includes a crowned shield in the center with horizontal lines and a single star in the center. Leopards support the shield from either side and there are two spears and fern leaves crossed below that are draped in a ribbon. Inscriptions on this face include Somali Republic above the seal, 20 and 16 on either side of the shield, and the face value of 1,000 Shillings below.

Reverse

The reverse face of the 2016 Somalia Elephant 1 oz Gold Coin includes the unique depiction of the African bush elephant for 2016. The image depicts the elephant with its ears fluffed out and its trunk raised as it stands near the shores of a body of water. The grass in the foreground sways in the breeze as the sun rises in the sky in the distance and tall tree dot the landscape. Inscriptions on this side read African Wildlife above the design and Elephant 1 oz Au 999.9 below the design element.

History

The Bavarian State Mint issues the Somalia Elephant Gold Coins in the African Wildlife Series for the Somali Republic. The coins were originally issued as the Zambian Elephant Series from 1999 to 2003. The hallmark of this series is the use of new African bush elephant designs on the reverse field each year.
