First established in 1535 in Spain, the National Mint of Mexico, or the Casa de Moneda de Mexico, is the oldest mint still in operation in North or South America. This mint is an IRA approved facility (ISO9001), meaning that the Silver Libertads are produced under the highest minting standards and may be included in most precious metals IRAs.

Mexican Silver Libertads were first issued in 1982. The original design was inspired by the Centenario gold coin, which celebrated Mexico’s liberation from Spain and was produced from 1921 through 1947. The first Libertad carried Winged Victoria (or Victory), the Mexican Angel of Independence, holding a wreath of laurel and a broken chain.

Like its predecessors, the reverse of the 2016 Silver Libertad features Winged Victoria. The Victory Angel stands between two volcanoes, named Popocatepeti and Iztaccihuati for two lovers from pre-Columbian lore. “1/10 ONZA,” “PLATA PURA,” “2016” and “LEY .999” are inscribed on the reverse.

Mexico’s national seal — an eagle standing atop cactus with a snake in its beak — is displayed at the center of the obverse. “ESTDOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS” is inscribed around the central image.
