Sales of the 2016 US Mint Proof Sets dropped to 595,184 sets. Even with these lower sales, interest in Proof Sets is still strong, as they are a great way for collectors to add to their collections or for people to start collecting. The 2016 Proof Set has a face value of $5.91 and an original issue price of $31.95. This set was made by the US Mint in San Francisco. Currently, Provident Metals is offering the 2016 US Mint Proof Set for purchase online.
Highlights:
The 2016 Proof Sets packaging remains similar to the packaging of previous years. The coins are placed in 3 individual plastic cases which are placed into a cardboard outer box. The outer box has an image of the Washington Monument at sunset on the front. The back of the box has pictures of the parks, the Presidents, and the obverse of the coins.
Designs
The Proof Set contains 3 separate sets of coins the America the Beautiful Quarters Program set, the Presidential Dollars set, and the regular Proof Set coins.
The America the Beautiful Quarters Program is a set of 56 quarters featuring national parks and other national sites. Five new quarters are included in the Proof Sets each year. In 2016, the parks featured are Shawnee National Forest in Illinois, Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota, Fort Moultrie (Fort Sumter National Monument) in South Dakota, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park in West Virginia, and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park in West Virginia.
Since its inception in 2007, the Presidential Dollars set usually featured 4 different Presidents in the Proof Sets. Since qualification to be included in the series is that the former President must have been deceased for at least 2 years, there were only 3 Presidents available in 2016 to be included Richard M. Nixon, Gerald R. Ford, and Ronald Reagan, the 37th, 38th, and 40th Presidents of the United States.
The regular Proof Set includes one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, and Kennedy Half Dollar. Also included is the latest issue of the Native American Dollar series. In 2016, this coin features a reverse design of the Native American Code Talkers of World War I and World War II, to symbolize the important role the code talkers played in both wars.
History
From 2010 to 2016, the Proof Sets have been consistent in their content. Each has included the American the Beautiful Quarters Program, with its rotating set of 5 quarters highlighting different national parks and national sites. Also included is The Presidential Dollar Program, which until 2016, honored 4 different Presidents each year. Only the lack of Presidents meeting the qualification to be in the program reduced this count to 3 in 2016. The Native American Dollar program also included 1 dollar each year. Each year these coins had a different reverse design to highlight the various contributions and achievements of Native Americans.
