One of the most popular releases in the recent history of the U.S. Mint was its gold commemorative version of the famous Mercury dime, issued on the 100th anniversary of the first striking of one of the all-time most popular historical coins among collectors. When the gold collectible version of the dime first went on sale — a mintage of 125,000 pieces — demand was astronomical, so high that orders could no longer be placed after just forty-five minutes. An offering of the remaining supply of just a few thousand coins a few months later sold out in just ninety minutes. These extraordinary coins have been sought-after by collectors ever since, and Provident Metals is delighted to be able to provide an exclusive offering in flawless condition. The 2016 American Mercury Dime 1/10 oz Gold Coin is now available for purchase online.
Coin Highlights:
The 2016 American Mercury Dime Gold Coin comes in a protective plastic slab with a label that shows its extraordinary grade — Specimen Proof 70 — indicating a coin free of any flaws even under five times magnification. Both the slab and the certification are provided by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC).
Obverse
The coin’s obverse field features an effigy of Lady Liberty, along with the West Point Mint’s “W” mint mark. This is accompanied by the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “2016.”
Reverse
The reverse side features symbols of both readiness and the yearning for peace — a Roman fasces and an olive branch — along with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and confirmations of face value and gold content.
History
The famous sculptor and medallist Adolph Alexander Weinman contributed a distinctive design to American coinage in 1916 when the United States Mint was engaged in a drive to renew the country’s coinage. That design was featured on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar, which became an extremely famous numismatic treasure in its own right in subsequent decades, and the head of its version of Lady Liberty was used for the simple and elegant design of a prolific new dime that became known as the “Mercury” dime: the wings on the sides of Lady Liberty’s helm evoked the wings of the swift Roman messenger god Mercury. Praised both then and now for its beauty, the Mercury dime was produced from 1916 through 1945, and its design is echoed on this modern gold collectible.
