The final four releases in the U.S. Mint’s First Spouse Gold Coin series spanned figures from the end of the Sixties through the early Nineties, with the first issue of 2016 paying tribute to Patricia Nixon. She was famous for a signature blend of dignity, class, and compassion, and was committed to promoting the spirit of volunteerism, urging Americans to volunteer in their local communities to help address the nation’s challenges head-on. She was also known for unflinching visits to regions facing threat or disaster, visiting the victims of a deadly earthquake in Peru, and becoming the first First Spouse to travel to a combat zone with her visit to South Vietnam in 1969. Her commitments and achievements are commemorated by the 2016-W Proof US Mint First Spouse Patricia Nixon 1/2 oz Gold Coin.

The 2016-W Proof US Mint First Spouse Patricia Nixon Gold Coin comes in an elegant wooden case along with a Certificate of Authenticity. Its proof-quality finish is the product of multiple strikes with hand-polished dies, producing the “cameo effect” of mirrored background fields with frosted raised details.

Obverse

The coin’s obverse field features a portrait of Patricia Nixon, along with the “W” mint mark of the West Point Mint and the lettering “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “LIBERTY,” “2016” and “37th 1969 – 1974.”

Reverse

The reverse field features stylized human figures linking hands around the globe to represent the spirit of worldwide volunteerism, one of Mrs. Nixon’s signature issues. This is accompanied by the lettering “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “$10,” and “1/2 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD.”

History

Congress charged the United States Mint with the creation of a coin series celebrating America’s Presidents in 2005, and alongside this was also tasked with producing a series of gold coins celebrating their spouses. Releases for that program, the First Spouse Gold Coin Program, began in 2007 with the objective of commemorating each of the nation’s First Spouses in order from the very beginning until the early Nineties. The final year of the program was 2016, and the first issue in that year was devoted to Patricia “Pat” Nixon.
