The 2017 1 oz Canadian Gold Elk is the fourth coin to be released in the Royal Canadian Mint’s Call of the Wild series. Each coin is made of one ounce of .99999 fine gold, the highest standard for pure gold available on the bullion market. Gold Elk coins carry a legal tender value of $200, which is the highest face value of any legal tender one ounce gold bullion coin.
The coin’s obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest reigning monarch. Inscriptions include “ELIZABETH II,” “2017,” “D.G. REGINA,” and “200 DOLLARS.”
Designed by Pierre Leduc, the reverse features an exquisitely detailed elk calling out to the sky. The elk, known for its elegant antlers, is predominantly found in western Canada.
You will also find a maple leaf-shaped privy mark on the coin’s reverse. This micro-engraved laser mark contains a “17” in the center to denote the year of issue. The inclusion of this security feature ensures the Gold Elk’s authenticity.
Gold Elks come individually sealed in an assay card approximately the size of a credit card. The decorative packing prevents scratches and guarantees each coin’s brilliant uncirculated condition. Assay cards are signed by the RCM’s Chief Assayer as a guarantee of the coin’s quality.
