In 1967, the Gold Krugerrand became the first gold bullion coin produced in the world for private investors. The successful Krugerrand program was only recently expanded to silver. The new 2017 South African Silver Krugerrand is the first silver bullion coin in the long-running Krugerrand product line. Each Silver Krugerrand contains one troy ounce of .999 fine silver and is produced under strict purity and quality standards by the South African Mint.

Designed by Otto Schultz, the obverse features a portrait of Paul Kruger, known as Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger. He was a political and military figure who led the movement for an independent South African republic. Kruger also served as the nation’s third president from 1883 to 1900. “SOUTH AFRICA” is inscribed in both English and the native Afrikaans.

The reverse features a Springbok antelope running across the plains, designed by Coert Steynberg. Inscriptions include “KRUGERRAND,” “2017,” and “1 OZ FINE SILVER.”

While most new-issue bullion coins come in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, the Silver Krugerrands are considered to have a Premium Uncirculated finish. It is a unique condition attributed to the cutting-edge laser etching technology used to bring out the fine details of the coin’s designs.

Located in Centurion in the Gauteng province outside of Pretoria, the South African Mint is responsible for producing circulation coinage and bullion products for the South African Reserve Bank.
