The 2017 British 10 oz Silver Queen’s Beasts – The Lion is the first design released as part of a 10-coin series from the British Royal Mint. Each design was initially released as a 2 oz silver coin and a 1 oz gold coin. This new edition of the Lion of England design contains 10 troy ounces of .9999 fine silver.
The Queen’s Beasts series honors the 10 heraldic beasts that stood guard at the Queen’s coronation ceremony in 1953. Each of the 6-foot tall sculptures represented the royal ancestry that came together to witness her Majesty being crowned. Stone replicas of these sculptures can be seen at Kew Gardens in the UK.
The effigy of Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the obverse. Around the rim, you will see Inscriptions of “ELIZABETH II,” the coin’s legal tender of 10 pounds, and the initials of the coin’s artist, Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark.
A roaring lion with a crown atop its mane is seen on the reverse, standing behind the shield of England. The beast represents courage, strength, and dignity. Inscriptions include “LION OF ENGLAND,” “10 OZ,” “FINE SILVER 999.9,” and “2017.”
The British Royal Mint has been manufacturing coins for Great Britain for over 1,000 years, making it one of the oldest mints in the world.
Each 10 oz Lion coin will ship in Uncirculated condition in a plastic capsule.
