Cougars are known by many names throughout the Americas, including mountain lion, puma, panther, or catamount. These wild cats have a large habitat range, which spans from the Canadian Yukon to the southern Andes of South America.

Obverse

Queen Elizabeth II is featured in right-profile relief on the obverse face of each coin. This image created by Susanna Blunt in 2003 has been featured on Canadian coinage since 2004.

Reverse

On the reverse side of each coin is the image of a cougar in 3D relief. The cougar looks as if it is leaping off the surface of the coin, and it is covered in gold. Cougars are naturally nocturnal creatures, and they are more closely related to the domestic cat than other predatory feline species like the jaguar.

History

The Royal Canadian Mint has a history of creating beautiful coins for the nation of Canada at its locations in both Ottawa and Winnipeg.
